Online User Guide - Catalog
Using the GlobeShots Catalog
The GlobeShots Catalog was created with Kudo Image Browser. Some of the features of Kudo Image Browser are inappropriate for the GlobeShots Catalog, and will not operate. Only the features which work with GlobeShots Catalog are discussed here, and some features may operate differently or may not be available under Windows.
The Catalog Window
When opened, the catalog displays thumbnail images in the Gallery View. You can switch between Gallery View, Small Gallery View, and List View by clicking on the appropriate button.
Gallery View uses a grid style layout, displaying several thumbnails. Below each thumbnail is listed the original file name and an icon that identifies the file type.
Small Gallery View allows more thumbnails to be viewed within the catalog window by reducing the thumbnails to 1/4 their normal size. Filenames are not displayed in this view.
List View uses a vertical layout with fewer thumbnails in the window, but with more information about each file. The list view shows the thumbnails in a vertical column and the file information in a second vertical column. A file type icon is also displayed in the second column.
Find button
Use the Find button to search the catalog for thumbnails with specific characteristics. After a search, the catalog displays only the thumbnails that were identified during the search all other thumbnails are hidden from view. For example, if you search the catalog for say, Africa, only thumbnails of Africa will be displayed. To return to a view of all of the images in the catalog, use Find to search for "Everything," or choose "Find All" from the Image menu.![]()
Use the pop-up menu to define the search characteristics. From this list you will normally only need to select by "Everything," "Name," "Kind," or "Keyword." Use the next pop-up menu to define how the catalog is to be searched. The contents of this menu will change according to the characteristic selected in the first pop-up menu.
Clicking on the "Options" button will expand the Find dialog, displaying more search criteria. Use these search pop-ups to narrow your search when you need to find specific images.![]()

Find All command
The "Find All" command in the Image menu allows you to locate and display all the thumbnails in the catalog. Use this command to return to the full GlobeShots catalog after you have limited the number of thumbnails displayed following a search for images with specific characteristics.
Info button
The Info button gives you quick access to information about an image. This option tells you the file name, size, date created, date modified, location, creator application, file kind, and dimensions of the original image, plus keywords attached to the thumbnail. NOTE: Because the TIFF files in the GlobeShots collection are compressed, the dimensions displayed in the Info dialog for all TIFF files relate to the thumbnail only - all the TIFF images on the GlobeShots disc have dimensions of 7.36 x 7.36in (187 x 187mm). The dimensions in the Info dialog of PICT and BMP images indicate the sizes of the originals.
Riffle button
Use the Riffle Control to flick quickly through thumbnails.
The Riffle feature allows you to shuffle quickly through the GlobeShots Catalog. To use the Riffle feature:
- Click and hold the Riffle control at lower right of the catalog window. Thumbnails will flick from one after another just above the Riffle control.
- Release the control when you see the thumbnail you want.
You can control the Riffle speed and direction by dragging the mouse to the left (backward) or right (forward) while holding it on the Riffle control. Dragging the mouse further to the left or right increases the shuffle speed backward or forward.
Preview
The thumbnails in the catalog are linked to the original file, meaning that it is possible to preview PICT and BMP images at their original size. To preview compressed TIFF files at their original size, extra memory may need to be allocated to the catalog, or if insufficient memory is available, the images may be viewed directly from your application. Refer to the "Read Me" document on the disc for information about previewing TIFF files.
Reveal Original
When you need to find the location of a GlobeShots image on the CD-ROM, simply click on the thumbnail to highlight it, then choose "Reveal Original" from the Image menu. The window where the original file is located will be opened, and the file will be highlighted.
Placing image files
There are three methods of taking an image from the catalog and placing it into a document:
Of course, you can also place or import an image from within the target application.
- Drag and Place
- Using the "Place" command from the Image menu
- Copy and Paste
Drag and Place
This feature works with Adobe Photoshop, QuarkXPress, Adobe PageMaker, Aldus/Macromedia FreeHand, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premier, and Fractal Painter.
On Macintosh computers, System 7 is required for Drag and Place. The format of the file being placed must be supported by that application - for example, Illustrator will accept PICT and BMP files, but not TIFF files.
Use the 'Drag and Place" feature to Place an image in your document: Just select the image, hold down the mouse button, and then drag the thumbnail to the open document.
QuarkXPress users: Drag and Place works with QuarkXPress versions 3. 1 and later If you are using version 3. 11, drag the XTension "Kudo XT 1.0.3" from the GlobeShots Catalog folder into your QuarkXpress XTensions folder. Versions 3.2 and later require do not require an XTension, and will work automatically.
Aldus FreeHand users: Drag and Place only works with version 3.1. FreeHand version 4.0 and MacroMedia FreeHand version 5.0 are not supported at this time.
PageMaker users: Drag and Place works with v. 4.2 and later.
To use Drag and Place:
- Select the thumbnail
- Hold down the mouse and drag it to the open document. The original image (or a preview of it, depending on the application you are using) will be placed in the document. In QuarkXPress, an image can also be placed directly into a pre-selected picture box. If a picture box is not selected, the image will be placed on the first page of the open document.
Place command
You can also place an image into a supported application by choosing the application from the "Place" submenu under the Image menu. The application must be open before it will show up under the Place sub-menu, and the target document must be visible before an image will be placed. In QuarkXPress, an image will be placed directly into a pre-selected picture box. If a picture box is not selected, the image will be placed on the first page of the open document.
